Start of an ill-fated trip down the island Passing through the bedouin village Disaster - we drove into a salt pan and had to be rescued Another view of the end of our expedition, miles from anywhere
Sunset, looking out to the wreck of the SS Electric This is the wreck seen (left) - great for fishing On the deck of the SS Electric (dangerous!) Part of a fishing trip to the old wreck
The staff designed and built this boat for fishing trips Before we built our boat, we'd hire a local dhow for our fishing expeditions Hugh, assistant chief, pulls a big one on board! Fish were plentiful On the beach after the fishing trip, with trophies
The fish had to be cleaned, we did this on the beach And on Fridays, we'd have Fish 'n Chip night! Charlie (left) grins at the camera Keith Ritchie (left) and Mick Abbott (right) were two other contract engineers like me I wish I could remember the names of the staff of the UK Club. They were from Goa
After gorging on fish, crayfish, and chips, we'd repair to the bar of the UK Club. I of course (left) was the Bar Officer On the left is Peter, the young communications operator who ran Telex and SSB services As the evenings wore on, we'd often get quite sloshed on the duty-free NAAFI booze Taking it easy in the UK Club one evening. These are all permanent DWS staff posted to Masirah for a six-month tour of duty
